A Guide to the UEFA Champions League Format

Life Planner

The UEFA Champions League is one of the most prestigious football tournaments in the world. Its format has evolved over the years to accommodate the growing popularity and complexity of European football. Let’s dive into how it works.

The Group Stage

The tournament kicks off with 32 teams divided into 8 groups of 4. Teams play each other in a double round-robin format, meaning each team faces every other team in their group twice: once at home and once away. The top 2 teams from each group advance to the knockout stage.

The Knockout Rounds

Starting with the Round of 16, matches are played in a home-and-away two-leg format. The team with the highest aggregate score over the two games progresses. If the scores are tied, the match may go to extra time and penalties.

The Grand Finale

The tournament culminates in a single-match final held at a pre-selected venue. The winner earns the coveted Champions League trophy and a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup.
